We have plenty of mustering to do throughout the year on Diamond Hill; a cattle property located approx 70km north west of Bundaberg. Diamond Hill runs Brahman cross breeders and bullocks on country that ranges from open pasture to rough timbered paddocks. Constant mustering provides a great opportunity to put a solid foundation on horses and dogs.
We would be completely lost without our dogs. They allow the two of us to muster the property efficiently and keep labour costs down. We strongly believe that reliable dogs are essential to effectively control and educate cattle in a quiet and stress free manner. Once we gather and settle a mob we lead with our horse. Cattle that push past us get hit on the nose and they quickly learn to walk behind us in an orderly fashion. The dogs diligently and quietly keep the mob moving forward, tucking in the sides and blocking the lead when they start to trot. With the help of strong dogs the cattle have learnt that they have nowhere to go but to follow us. This generally means that mustering is a stress free operation, and less stress equates to more kilos.
We are very fortunate to have Meg. She has put her life on the line many times and along the way sorted out a few attitude problems and punched some manners and respect back into the cattle. We have been lucky to find a magic cross in Scooter and Meg and together they have produced pups that have stamina, brains and grunt – a mix that is very hard to find. Meg and her descendants have played a huge part in how well educated the cattle at Diamond Hill are today. Scooter and Meg have pups scattered from far north Queensland to Victoria and to date we have had very positive feedback with litters often sold six months before they are born. We are looking forward to working Meg and Scooter's grand children in 2011.
Our unhealthy addiction to horses has led to us acquiring a few broodmares. Our broodmares descend from proven bloodlines and we carefully select stallions based on temperament and ability. All mustering is done on horseback and we feel this experience is invaluable for the development of a stable and settled horse.
